Overview

We were selected by the NYC Parks Department and the Old Seaport Alliance to design and install a large dome structure for the "Dusk Space" exhibit by artist Josh Levine.

Challenge

VOLO created a serene summer experience in Lower Manhattan with minimal environmental impact on a tight timeline.

Through collaborations with a diverse group of arts organizations and artists, New York City Parks brings to the public both experimental and traditional art in many park locations. Created by New York artist Josh Levine, the concept of “Dusk Space” was to create a serene summer evening field experience to Lower Manhattan. The artist envisioned a large dome frame as the centerpiece of his exhibit.

NYC Parks Department, in conjunction with the Old Seaport Alliance (a historic Seaport neighborhood South of the Brooklyn Bridge) and the artist, chose VOLO Events Agency to design and install the Dome structure in Peck Slip Park – at the center Manhattan’s Financial District. The project was to be completed on a short lead schedule with as little impact to surrounding environs as possible.

Solution

A custom Geodesic Dome: VOLO’s solution for an immersive art experience

The VOLO team fabricated a custom–colored, powder–coated, galvanized steel framed Geodesic Dome – 31 feet high, with a 62-foot diameter footprint. The dome was installed in Peck Slip Park over a 48 hour window including the use of an 80-Ton Crane. To realize the Artists’ vision of “a remote country field at dusk”, the expert designers at VOLO installed a base of padded Astroturf so that exhibit patrons could lie down on a soft, welcoming surface.

Result

An immersive experience in the Heart of Manhattan – bringing art to life

VOLO designed, engineered, manufactured and delivered a 3,047 square foot Geodesic Dome –exhibit space in a busy Manhattan location with little interruption to surrounding activity and environs.

VOLO’s expertise assisted the artist and NYC Parks in presenting an expression of pastoral authenticity in a technologically advancing world for patrons to consider and appreciate. This was the first public art installation to be displayed in Peck Slip Park.

The result was a critically acclaimed exhibit enjoyed by New York City residents over the term of the “Dusk Space” performance.

VOLO Events Agency services provided to NYC Parks Department included: Geodesic dome rental, budgeting, scheduling, design, architectural, engineering, foundation design, permits, road closures, security, construction, heavy equipment, and specialized installation labor. VOLO met and exceeded the exacting high standards demanded by the City of New York.
