Overview

VOLO’s Strategic Approach to Corporate Event Planning at Scale: VOLO partnered with McAfee for over a decade to imagine, build, and evolve what would become one of the most respected global cybersecurity conferences: first as the Focus Security Conference, and later rebranded as the MPOWER Cybersecurity Summit. These events became essential platforms for executive engagement, customer loyalty, product launches, and strategic messaging, drawing thousands of cybersecurity professionals each year from around the globe.

Challenge

In 2008, McAfee underwent a leadership shift, appointing Dave DeWalt as CEO and David Milam as CMO. The new executive team was determined to reposition McAfee as the original innovator — the “OG” — in cybersecurity. Their goal: to build a bold, branded customer conference that would stand alongside (and apart from) industry titans like RSA and Black Hat. Importantly, this flagship event also had to be financially self-sustaining.

To realize this vision, McAfee launched a competitive agency review, seeking a corporate event planner capable of delivering both big-picture strategy and flawless execution. VOLO was selected from a field of six corporate event planners for our clear creative vision, scalable event management and production methodology, and bold approach to brand storytelling.

Solution

Our approach was rooted in one belief: a great conference isn’t just a schedule — it’s an experience. We worked year-round in close collaboration with McAfee’s internal team to elevate every aspect of the event — from strategic messaging and executive keynotes to creative media production, staging innovation, and customer immersion. This early foundation of trust and alignment with McAfee’s events team proved essential — enabling the program to scale and adapt through every corporate transition, including McAfee’s acquisition by Intel, its rebranding as Intel Security, and its eventual return to independent operation.

Over the 12-year run, VOLO delivered full-spectrum corporate event planner support for every event, across multiple venues including the MGM Grand, Palazzo/Venetian, Wynn/Encore, and ARIA in Las Vegas.

Key Features by Year

• Years 1–4 (Focus Inception):

  • Full event architecture, including staging, keynote production, breakout tracks, and media
  • Theater-in-the-round, immersive LED environments, and 3D content integration
  • High-profile keynotes from President Bill Clinton, General Colin Powell, and Sir Richard Branson and industry leaders
  • Multiple breakout sessions
  • Elegant balance of education, product marketing, and entertainment
  • A Grand Finale with acts like Peter Cincotti, Katharine McPhee, Geanina and Vanessa Marcil

• Years 5–9 (Brand Integration – Intel Security):

  • VOLO helped integrate Intel’s brand into the event while maintaining McAfee’s core identity
  • Creative themes such as “New.Next” and “Chart Your Course” used environmental design and stagecraft to reinforce positioning
  • High-impact guest speakers included Condoleezza Rice, Malcolm Gladwell, Ashton Kutcher and Ted Coppel along with industry leaders
  • Multiple breakout sessions
  • Multi-screen LED configurations with 13M+ pixel resolutions and dynamic content switching
  • Social media and real-time engagement built directly into the session experience
  • Closing-night performances by Goo Goo Dolls and other multi-platinum acts

• Years 10–12 (MPOWER Rebrand & Innovation):

  • Rebranded as MPOWER under the theme “Together is Power”
  • Attendee-led content model using interactive polling tools
  • Modular stage decks and island pods designed for movement, intimacy, and connection
  • Keynote discussions featuring Madeleine Albright, Tim Berners-Lee, Roger McNamee and Walter Isaacson and industry leaders
  • Multiple breakout sessions
  • Themed design elements such as timepieces, tectonic “map” stages, and brand iconography
  • Sponsorship expo with fully produced environments and training integration
  • Final night concerts with Fall Out Boy, Weezer, and DJ sets
