To rapidly expand the TESLA Model Y General Assembly plant within the space-constrained Fremont factory, VOLO applied the rigorous project management discipline of a leading global events agency. Through our dedicated Structures Division, we navigated complex seismic, legal, and underground utility challenges to deliver a custom 23,000-square-foot facility in an 8-week sprint - beating an "impossible" deadline that no other vendor would accept.
They required a massive 100’ x 230’ x 34’ high, open-gable tension fabric structure to be fully operational before the end of the fiscal year – only 8 weeks away.
The timeline was aggressive, but the physical and design obstacles were even more daunting. The project faced a myriad of legal, financial, and engineering hurdles, including strict seismic requirements and the critical need to mitigate conflicts with complex underground utilities present beneath the factory surface. Every other vendor approached declined the project, unable to commit to the strict deadline or manage the high-risk complexity of the site. TESLA needed a partner who could accept full accountability for a mission-critical deployment where failure was not an option.
While our Structures Division exists to support our live events by providing temporary venues for global activations, we leveraged that unique background to solve this industrial problem. Unlike traditional construction firms, VOLO operates with a "show must go on" mentality, where deadlines are absolute and agility is paramount.
Leveraging our history of successfully delivering structures for TESLA under ridiculous timelines, VOLO mobilized immediately. We applied our event-born project management skills to parallel-process the architectural, structural, and permitting phases while simultaneously solving the underground utility conflict issues. We designed and fabricated a custom steel-framed tension fabric structure featuring open gables and included a comprehensive turnkey package with full lighting, electrical integration and installation.
This project demonstrated that VOLO is not just a vendor, but a strategic partner capable of applying the speed and precision of the events industry to solve the most difficult industrial infrastructure challenges.
